Liberty County Sheriff Steve Sikes said he took swift and decisive action following a reported incident at the Liberty County Jail on Thursday night.
The alleged incident led to the termination of a jailer and his subsequent arrest Friday morning. Around 8 p.m. Thursday, an incident reportedly took place that involved an unidentified inmate and jailer Donavan Hyatt.
The sheriff said a thorough investigation was conducted involving his detectives and jail administrators. The sheriff added that the department consulted with the Atlantic Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office.
Based on their recommendations, the sheriff terminated Hyatt, and with the aid of officers and detectives, the former jailer was arrested Friday morning. Hyatt was booked for simple battery and assault under color of law, which both are misdemeanors.
Hyatt went before a magistrate judge and was released after paying an unspecified bond.
