A Thursday-night raid on a mobile home in Ludowici snagged three suspects wanted in connection with armed robberies in Liberty County, according to Sheriff Steve Sikes.

In his statement to the media, the sheriff said detectives working on armed-robbery and aggravated-assault cases in the county obtained a search warrant Monday for Richard Matthews’ mobile home in Oak Meadows trailer park in Ludowici. When authorities entered the home, they found Matthews and two other men, later identified as Michael Palmer and Harvey Epps, who initially gave authorities false first names. The men were arrested in connection with a rash of burglaries and robberies in the area. In addition, when detectives ran Epps' fingerprints through a database, they learned he was listed as a fugitive wanted in connection with a shooting in Vermont, Sikes said.

Law-enforcement officers had been seeking the men for their reported ties to several area cases, including a convenience-store robbery and individual robberies that resulted in assaults, according to the sheriff. They also are suspected of committing home invasions, however Sikes said at this time, there appears to be no link to a recently home invasion on Guyton Lane in Walthourville during which a man was injured by a shotgun blast.

Sikes said studying video tapes and a photo lineup with victims led to the suspects’ arrests.

Epps is charged with armed robbery and aggravated assault. Palmer is charged with robbery and aggravated assault. Matthews is charged with armed robbery. Sikes said more charges pending.
