Vandals recently struck several locations in Long County, including the Ludowici Well Pavilion, according to both the Ludowici Police Department and the Long County Sheriff’s Department.
LPD Investigator Diannia Duncan said approximately $1,500 damage was caused to the roof of the pavilion overnight on June 27. Several of the pavilion roof’s orange Ludowici tile were broke. The town is named for the family that established the plant where the tiles were made.
Duncan asked that if anyone has information on vandalism to contact the department at 545-2222.
On the same date, LCSO Lt. Danny Dinkins said he discovered several road signs that had been stolen during a traffic stop on Highway 301. Wayne County resident Stephen J. Penpaw, 20, was arrested and charged with theft by receiving stolen property, after signs from Mill Pond Lane, Old Barrington Road and Pine Island Road were discovered in the bed of the truck that Penpaw was driving.
Sheriff Craig Nobles said, “The sheriff’s office will arrest anyone who steals or possesses Long County road signs, these signs are the property of Long County, and they are expensive.”
LPD Chief T.J. Gaskin said his department will host its first National Night Out on Aug. 7. The chief said the event focuses on crime prevention, neighborhood watch programs, and partnerships between the community and police.
“With this program we want to get the message out on the street that our local neighborhoods, will be working with us to fight back against these criminals,” Gaskin said.
The chief said that along with his department, there will be several other public safety organizations at the event at Long County High School. He also said that if any civic group or church is interested in participating, they can call his department.
