A Fort Stewart soldier is facing charges in the death of his infant son.

According to Hinesville Assistant Police Chief Terronova Smith, Zachary Cunning is facing charges of second degree murder and cruelty to children in the second degree.  

Smith said officers from the Hinesville Police Department were dispatched to Berkshire Terrace apartments September 5 concerning an unresponsive child.

When officers arrived, they encountered an unresponsive 3-month-old and attempted to perform lifesaving measures on the infant till emergency medical personnel arrived. They continued to perform CPR on the child till he was declared deceased.

The child’s body was taken to the GBI crime lab in Pooler where an autopsy was conducted.   

A warrant was issued for Cunning and he was arrested on September 18. Cunning appeared before a magistrate judge on September 19 and was denied bond.
