A five year old child was killed and several other injured in a Liberty County school bus wreck about 7 Tuesday morning in Gum Branch. The child was identified as Cambria Shuman.
According to Liberty County EMA Assistant Director Larry Logan, the accident happened on Highway 196 at Ray Road and is still under investigation.
Logan reported that 22 children were taken to area hospitals and Memorial Health University Medical Center for various injuries.
Fort Stewart spokesman Kevin Larson said 13 of the children were treated at Winn Army Community Hospital and all were "attentive and alert" when they arrived. All were reunited with parents and guardians, and some of the children were released. Parents may call Winn Army Community Hospital at 912-435-6965.
EMS personnel were seen moving children on stretchers to waiting ambulances as worried parents walked beside their children. The bus driver, Evelyn Rodriguez, 62, was also transported to Memorial Health.
Georgia State Patrol Officers are investigating the accident. They are reporting that the bus was transporting children to Taylor's Creek Elementary and the Liberty County Pre-K Center. GSP is working to retrieve the video from the bus.
The Liberty County School System issued a statement saying, "This morning a Liberty County school bus was involved in a single vehicle accident, which resulted in one student fatality. Our thoughts and prayers are with the student’s family in their time of grief. The remaining students and driver were transported to local hospitals. Grief counselors have been made available to all students and staff. The bus accident is currently under investigation by the Georgia State Patrol. The Liberty County School System asks the community to join them in continued thoughts, prayers and
support for all individuals affected by today’s accident."
