Are you looking for a great service project for your local civic, youth, or church group? How about one that is good for the environment and also provides some funds for your organization as well? I recently learned about an award-winning eco-friendly company called TerraCycle. TerraCycle was the brainchild of Princeton student, Tom Szaky and his partner Jon Beyer. Their goal was to market an all natural plant food and fertilizer that reused waste materials, was environmentally safe and also reused materials for the actual packaging of the products. They created the Bottle Brigade, a service and fundraising program for nonprofit groups. Groups are shipped boxes to collect 20 oz. plastic bottles. The company pays for shipping and pays by the pound for the bottles that the group provides. These bottles then become the containers for the company’s plant food and fertilizer products.
All of the products use recycled containers as their packaging, ranging from the 20 oz. bottles to two liter bottles and other types of plastic containers.
