Thank you for Honor Flight support
Letter to the Editor generic

Editor:

Hello, my name is John E. Cooksey.   I am a retired Army SFC, served in the Vietnam War and retired in Hinesville.  In September 2019 I had the privilege of participating in the Honors Flight Savannah program organized by retired Lt. and Mrs. Larry Spears of Baxley, Georgia.

Honor Flight Savannah is dedicated to honoring our military veterans.  They are a 501 (c)(3) non-profit charity organization dedicated to transporting America’s veterans, at no cost to them, to Washington DC so that they may visit the memorials built and dedicated to honoring their sacrifice in past wars.

I would like to take this opportunity to personally thank them for all of their hard work in continuing to organize and support this great event.  In addition to all the communication and logistics, they transported all the senior veterans to Washington D.C.

Their dedication to our retired service men and women is truly amazing.  They organized letters from our family so that we could open mail like we did when we were in the service.  They had school children write us letters thanking us for our service and provided us with a nice care package for our trip.  It was a real treat to read all the kind words from our family and from strangers.

During our tour in D.C., we had the honor of visiting the WWII, Korean and Vietnam War Memorials. Seeing the names of these heroes was such a moving experience but also made me proud to be an American. We also went to the Arlington Cemetery where we witnessed the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

It was a most enjoyable trip especially for a senior like myself. The trip allowed veterans to travel to D.C. free of charge to honor our service and to remember the soldiers who have lost their lives for this country.

I highly encourage all of the senior veterans to apply to attend one of these special Honor Flight trips. Again, hats off to a wonderful program sponsored by Lt. and Mrs. Spears.
