Long County is back on the road this weekend, going to Pembroke on Friday to take on Bryan County.
The Redskins, with a 4-4 overall record and a 3-2 mark in Region 2-AA, are coming off a big region win in which they beat the Jeff Davis Yellow Jackets, 28-21. Friday’s game is huge for Bryan County as it tries to hold on to a playoff spot. Currently, BCHS is tied with Bacon County (3-2) for third place in the region, with both teams being only a half-game behind Benedictine Military School (3-1).
The Blue Tide, who go to Pembroke with a 3-5 overall record and a 1-4 region mark, also are coming off a big win after manhandling McIntosh County, 46-12. Though they are mathematically alive for the playoffs, the reality is, at this point in the season, they are looking more to end on a high note, play well and win as many games as possible.
When looking at the series between Long County and Bryan County, it appears that either team could win this weekend’s game. Though the Redskins hold a 6-4 advantage, the Blue Tide have won three of the past five games, with all but two of those games being decided by less than a touchdown.
On paper, the two teams look fairly even, with the Redskins averaging 21 points a game compared to the Blue Tide’s 20. Long County allows 26 points, while Bryan County notches 29. According to MaxPreps.com, Bryan County is rated No. 305 in the state, and Long County is No. 381.
If the Blue Tide is going to win, they will need to play sound defense like they did last week against McIntosh County, when they forced six turnovers. The offense also mixed things up running and passing.
Friday’s game is at 7:30 p.m.
