Bradwell Institute’s junior varsity boys’ basketball team and Lewis Frasier’s eighth-grade girls’ basketball team finished as runners-up for the 23rd annual Donell Woods Memorial Basketball Tournament.
The tournament for JV and middle school teams was Saturday at Bradwell and Snelson-Golden Middle School.
The Lewis Frasier Lady Patriots beat Liberty County’s JV girls 49-20 and then beat New Hampstead 33-24. That placed the eighth-grade dynamo team against the JV Lady Wildcats of Camden County.
Camden had taken down Statesboro 31-26. The Lady Wildcats then took down the Lady Tiger JV 34-32 in dramatic fashion with a 3-point shot hitting the net with only 3 seconds left.
That set up the championship game between the eighth-grade Lady Patriots and the Lady Wildcats. Camden held the lead throughout the game, but the Patriots kept within reach. Camden extended the point-spread, but Lewis Frasier rallied in the fourth with a series of shots and take aways to close the gap. But Camden stayed on top for the 41-30 win.
In the boys’ division the Johnson JV toppled Coffee County 82-55. The Bradwell JV beat Glynn Academy 45-30 to set up the championship between Johnson and BI.
Johnson played a run-and-gun format with a full press to take the 55-39 win.
The annual tournament honors the late Donell Woods, a former basketball coach at Bradwell and former football coach at the original Liberty County High School, where he graduated in 1957.
