The Long County Team of Lamar Homebuilders had a tough season, playing every game on the road. Despite the travel they were undefeated as they prepped to play LCRD’s midget Cosmopolitan Club Thursday evening.
And the Cosmopolitans were set to finish the season on a positive note and toppled the Homebuilders in 5 innings 11-2.
The teams were tied going into the second inning 1-1, but two wild throws allowed two Cosmo runners to score. Lamar Homebuilders converted a double play to take their turn at bat. In the bottom of the second, Cosmo pitcher Kelissa Hargrove, struck out all three batters.
Cosmopolitan Club scored another two runs to extend their lead 5-1 but the Homebuilders added a run to close the third trailing by three.
Hargrove once again struck out the first two batters and a runner thrown out at base kept the Homebuilders from scoring in the top of the fourth.
In the fifth, the Cosmo Club’s bats caught fire and soon the bases were loaded with no outs. Lamar Homebuilder’s pitcher Tayler Poole walked in a score, making it 6-2 for Cosmo.
Marena Coonrod hit a single bringing in another runner and Kaylee Vaughn slugged a triple and Cosmo was on top 10-2. Hargrove hit a single to bring home the final score for the Cosmo Club 11-2.
Lamar Homebuilders opened the fifth knowing they had to rally. Hargrove struck out the Homebuilders’ first two batters and the third hit a pop fly that was fielded, ending the game with Cosmo staying on top 11-2.
“It makes us feel good going into the playoffs,” Cosmo coach Jennifer Coonrod said. “I feel like our team is ready, and we are ready to take teams on.”
Coonrod believes the fundamentals helped their team with their victory. She said they were hitting the ball well and defending the field the way they should be.
“Everyone has gotten better,” Freddy Vaughn, the Cosmopolitan Club’s other coach said.
“It was pretty hard,” Tracey Hulvey assistant coach of Lamar Homebuilders, said.
“It was devastating,” head coach of the Homebuilders Lamar Poole said. “We didn’t hit the ball today but I’m proud of our girls and the way they played the whole season.”
