Liberty tops Bradwell
Panthers host Statesboro, Tigers face Richmond Hill Friday

The Liberty County High School Panthers captured the Commissioner’s Cup this past Friday beating cross-town rival Bradwell Institute 30-20 in the first full football game of the 2020 season. 

Playing before a home crowd at Donell Woods Stadium the Panther team managed to take their second win of the season improving to 2-0. The Tigers fall to 0-2 for the year. 

Per stats posted to maxpreps.com, the Panthers were led by senior Michael McLeod who had 80 yards on three carries. Panther quarterback Chris Dennis completed four of six passes for 35 yards and a touchdown. He also rushed for 35 yards on three carries. Sophomore Panther receiver James Summerset had two receptions for 35 yards.

Summerset also led the Panther defense with 13 total tackles in the game.

Per maxpreps.com, the Tigers led in rushing yards with 145 led by senior Jahki Newton who rushed for 102 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries. Junior Elijah Leiataua had seven carries for 31 yards and junior Michael Prince rushed for 12 yards on four carries.

The Tigers’ Elijah Melford had three receptions for 37 total yards and two touchdowns. Tiger kicker Patrick Logan was two of three point after attempts.

Leiataua led the Tigers’ defense with six total tackles. Junior Mikah Perry had five total tackles. 

On Sept. 25, the two teams played but the game was called after the third quarter due to rain with Liberty up 10-6.

The Tigers play host to Richmond Hill (3-1) at Hokey Jackson Stadium. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.

The Panthers will host the Statesboro Blue Devils (0-3) at Donell Woods at 7:30 p.m.
