CLEVELAND — Four Georgia Southern Football players were selected Tuesday as preseason all-Americans by Phil Steele Publications.
Junior running back Dominique Swope was named to the first-team offense. Senior quarterback Jerick McKinnon and senior offensive tackle Dorian Byrd were named to the third team, and offensive tackle Garrett Frye was listed on the fourth team.
Swope, who amassed 1,246 rushing yards and 17 touchdowns in 2012 for back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons, combined with McKinnon (1,817 yards, 20 touchdowns) to set the NCAA Football Championship Series record for most yards by teammates in the same season with 3,063.
Byrd and Frye return to an Eagle offensive line that led the way for 399.4 rushing yards per game last season, best in NCAA Division I. The Eagles report for preseason camp July 31 and begin practice Aug. 1. Georgia Southern opens the season by hosting Savannah State at 6 p.m. Aug. 31.
Little Eagles football camp set
STATESBORO — Georgia Southern football’s Little Eagles Camp is set for Monday-Wednesday, July 22-24, with a three-hour camp in Savannah’s Daffin Park on Friday, July 26.
Aspiring Eagles will learn the fundamentals of football from the Georgia Southern coaching staff and participate in instructional sessions, drills, competitions and other activities during the three-hour sessions. The Little Eagles Camp in Statesboro runs from 9 a.m.-noon all three days, with the morning camp in Savannah running from 9 a.m.-noon.
The cost of the three-day camp in Statesboro is $90, and the morning camp in Savannah is $40. Campers receive a T-shirt, camp certificate and photo with coach Jeff Monken.
Online registration is accepted through GeorgiaSouthernFootballCamps.com through 5 p.m. Sunday. Walkup registration is available beginning at 8:30 a.m. Camp scholarships are available for need-based situations. For more information, call 912-478-5522
