The Long County High School softball team on Tuesday got back on the winning track with an 8-0 win over Atkinson County in Ludowici.
The Region 2-AA win was big for Long County after dropping three straight.
Lady Tide head coach Brian Thomas said that it was the result of a team effort.
“We played well defensively and had a few timely hits. I was happy with the overall effort,” he said. Lady Tide pitcher Harley Dawson got the start and went the full six innings to pick up the win, striking out nine Lady Rebels and allowing only three hits.
“I thought that Harley did a great job in the last three innings of making adjustments and making the correct pitches,” Thomas said.
The Lady Tide also had a good night at the plate. Sam Garcia went 2 for 4 with two runs scored, Taylor Poole going 1 for 2 with one run batted in, Kaylyn McEwin went 1 for 3, and Dawson went 1 for 2 with two walks.
“We played great defense, led by third baseman Sam Garcia. She actually caught a ball that would have landed on the other side of the backstop by the third-base dugout,” Thomas said.
With the win, Long County improved its overall record to 4-8 and its region mark to 2-4.
On Wednesday, the Lady Tide faced Vidalia at home, and on Thursday, they were scheduled to face Metter on the road. Results from those two region games will be in Sunday’s Courier.
