The Long County 14U boys’ basketball team won the GRPA District 2 basketball title on Saturday by defeating Southeast Bryan County/Richmond Hill, 48-41, in the championship game in Ludowici.
Long County’s Dwight Coles had 15 points, Jason Southard had 14 points, and Eric Crawford 10 points. Holden Riddle had six points, Marquise Dixon scored two points, and Quentin Facen had one point.
In the semifinals, Long County squeaked by McIntosh County, 49-47.  Dixon had 12 points. Riddle and Crawford each had 11 points, Southard had six points, Coles had five points, and Facen had four points.
Long County players Grayson Howard, Cameron Taylor, Corey Taylor and Nick Walthour also played well in the tournament. The team was coached by Jason Southard, Eric Crawford and Steve Marrero.
According to recreation-department Director Henry Strickland, this is the first year that Long County has been given the opportunity to host the 14- and 12-and-under district tourneys.
“Man, what a great thing for Long County,” he said. “We get to host our first tournament, and then the 14-and-under team wins the championship. It don’t get much better than that.
The 14U team travels to Jefferson to play in the state tournament this weekend.
