The Long County High School softball team topped Atkinson County, 2-1, on Monday in Ludowici to move into today’s region playoffs.
Long County will face Bacon County today in Alma. The first game of the best-of-three series begins at 5 p.m.
The Lady Tide narrowly got by Atkinson County with pitcher Harley Dawson picking up the win.
Lady Tide head coach Brian Thomas was pleased with the win but said that his team didn’t perform to its capabilities offensively.
“It was a good win for our program, though I was a bit disappointed with our energy in the game,” Thomas said. “We came out flat and played that way offensively, but I expect that to be corrected before Wednesday’s game.”
The Tide’s leading batters were Dawson, Cat Wingate, Katie Estill, Madalyne Flynn and Sam Garcia, who all were 1-for-3 at the plate.
With the win, the Lady Tide improved to 12-9 and 6-6 in Region 2-AA.
Long County goes into today’s games on a hot streak, having won five of its past six games. However, the Lady Tide today will have their hands full against the Lady Raiders, who come into the series with an overall record of 21-5 and a 2W-AA mark of 10-2.
“Bacon County is a great team. They are currently ranked in the top 10 in the state in AA, so our task will be great, but I think that we will pull it together and give a great effort on Wednesday,” Thomas said.
