Rec department planning busy summer

It might be a bit tough to think about summer being right around the corner when the wacky weather has kept us unseasonably cool for longer than usual this year. But soon the temperatures will prove summer is here and for the kids, out of school, it means a variety of camp and activities.
The Liberty County Recreation Department offers summer day camp, specialized sports camps, swimming lessons and more.
Registration for day camp opens the first week of May and runs throughout the summer. The fee is $75 per camper per week.
This fee includes the cost for field trips. Campers may need additional money for snacks, souvenirs, etc, on field trips. Fees for the upcoming week must be paid each Thursday to the director, or a $10 late fee will be accessed.
The director must be told in advance when a camper will be absent in order to maintain his or her slot.
Camp starts the week after Liberty County schools are released. Campers should be dropped off at the Shuman Center between 7:30 and 9:30 a.m. and be picked up no later than 6 p.m.
A weekly calendar will be issued each Friday to provide a schedule of camp activities. All campers and staff will attend all field trips and activities. There will not be an option to remain at the center while others participate in activities.
The LCRD also provides swim lessons throughout the summer at the Hinesville and Liberty County Community Complex pools. The fee is $25 for the two-week program. Morning sessions are available at 9, 10 and 11. Evening lessons are at 6:10 starting June 2, June 16 and July 7.
Both pools also will be open to the public from 2-6 p.m. daily. Admission is $2 per day. Family nights at the pool are from 7:15-9 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays.
The pools also are available for rent Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7:30-10 p.m. and from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. or 7-10 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.
The LCRD also will offer specialized sports camps. These camps cover baseball, soccer, golf, weight training, women’s body sculpting, Frisbee golf, basketball, softball, cheerleading, dance, tennis and more. The fees range from $30-$60, and some programs are free.
Potential campers must be registered for these programs through the LCRD office.
A variety of new programs also are being offered at the new complex in Midway. They include acrobatics, ballet, hip-hop and jazz classes. The LCCC also offers piano lessons and martial-arts programs.
For information on fees, programs and registration call the LCRD at 876-5359 or the LCCC at 884-3500.
