Long County cheerleading teams capture top awards

A cheerleading team based in Long County brought home 11 first-place awards and three world bids from two recent open competitions in Lakeland, Florida, and Albany.

The Southeast Cheer All-Stars earned five first place awards and one world bid from the Diamond Cheer and Dance Invitational in Florida, and six first place awards and two world bids from the DCA in Albany. The team also earned one grand-champion bid and the sportsmanship award from Albany.

Leading up to these outings, the team competed in nine competitions between March and November. The team started with nine girls and has grown to 60 members, 50 girls and 10 boys.
The kids make up five squads; Fury, Force, Fierce, Rage and Surge.
Team fundraising director Wendy Blakeslee said the plan is to add a two more squads; one for kids between the ages of 3 and 8 for exhibitions only, and another for special needs kids.

She said the team has seven coaches, all USASF certified. The team owner is Tammy Allen and cheer director is Kelley Holbrook.
