Former Atlanta Falcons quarterback Steve Bartowski, area McDonalds owner Gary Dodd and attorney Jeff Arnold were among a slew of golfers who hit the newly developed Ricefields Golf Course on Saturday on Hampton Island to start the first annual Ronald McDonald House Charities Golf Tournament.
The event consisted of 10 four-person teams who golfed in the morning and later toured Hampton Island and dined on Lowcountry boil. Ricky Murphy and Joe Hallett co-chaired the tournament.
“We raised $60,000 from the tournament alone,” Nikole Gore-Layton, executive director of the Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Coastal Empire, said. “Monies will be used to support children and families that benefit from services and programs from RMHC. Our cornerstone program is the Ronald McDonald House that serves families with a home away from home when their children are in the hospital. We serve approximately 250 families each year who live more than 30 miles outside the city limits of Savannah, including Liberty County.”
“It’s nice to get out here and see how nice this course is and be among the first to play on it,” Dodd said as he prepared for the tournament on the driving range. ìIím all about McDonalds and this charity.î
Ricefields Golf Course is the newly completed course at Hampton Island stretching across 7,200 acres. Designed by Davis and Mark Love of Love Golf Design, the course blends the pristine and natural beauty of the marsh with the manicured greens of the course. It weaves through multiple stocked ponds, an equestrian center and 200 acres of restored 200-year old rice fields for which the course was named. The field will be harvested for rice to be used in their restarant.
The mission of the Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Coastal Empire is to create, find and support programs that directly enhance the health and well-being of children and families. Visit their web site www.rmhccoastalempire.org for more information.
