SAVANNAH — An Army Ranger killed in a firefight in Afghanistan is being honored by soldiers in his Savannah-based battalion.

The elite 1st Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment planned a memorial service Friday at Hunter Army Airfield to remember Sgt. Tanner Stone Higgins.

The Army says Higgins, a native of Yantis, Texas, was mortally wounded April 14 in a gunbattle in Afghanistan's Logar Province while leading an assault against an enemy compound.

Troops from the elite Ranger battalion have served multiple deployments to Afghanistan since the U.S. went to war there in 2001.

The Army says 23-year-old Higgins is survived by his wife and parents.
