Golf tourney for Brandon

A golf tournament to raise funds for Brandon Hellgren, a 7-year-old who has been diagnosed with leukemia, will be Oct. 8 at Cherokee Rose Country Club.
The John E. Smiley Jr. “Jay Bird” Memorial Golf Tournament has established Team Brandon to help support Hellgren, the son of Bradwell Institute baseball coach Rhett Hellgren. Free basketball camp at St. James

The St. James Sports Center will host a free fundamentals camp Oct. 1. It is open to boys ages 12-14 and players in fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth grades. Participants can check in from 9-9:45 a.m. Camp starts at 10 a.m. From 10 a.m.-noon, campers will participate in an intense fundamental workout.
There also will be a lunch break and motivational speaker.  Campers can bring their own lunch, but concessions will be available.
The top 24 campers will be selected to participate in an all-star game, which will be videotaped. All-star players will receive free jerseys. Campers must bring shorts and shoes.
