Roughly 80 people braved a downpour Saturday to attend 2009 Kiss-A-Pig Team Liberty candidate Jason Rogers’ second annual Pig Patty Party. The event raised funds for this year’s campaign.
“The weather was OK the first few hours,” Rogers said. “But the majority of the folks ended up staying even through the torrential downpours. We had a really good time.”
Rogers estimated $6,500 was raised and will be added to funds collected earlier in the campaign during a bowling tournament and a school contest in November.
Kiss-A-Pig, which benefits the American Diabetes Association, pits Team Liberty against Team Savannah-Chatham Public Schools for the honor of kissing Hamlet the pig at a gala in May.
Team Liberty won last year, for the first time, and candidate Danny Creasy kissed Lulu. Team Liberty raised $160,000.
This year, Rogers said the team hope to reach $175,000, but he thinks the economy has affected fundraising.
“We are going to pick up the pace on the remaining events,” Rogers said.
The next event, on April 11, is the sixth annual Friends for Diabetes Sporting Clays Tournament at the Dorchester Shooting Preserve. Last year’s shoot raised $80,000.
Organized by Claude Dryden of Dryden Enterprises, the event usually draws crowds. Dryden said sponsorship slots at various prices are still available. Dryden said anyone who needs information can call 369-7634.
A new fundraiser slated for this year’s campaign comes from Carla Goodwin of the Coastal Bank. She is making bows to sell for $10 apiece.
“I will be making the bows by myself, but I welcome any help,” Goodwin said in an e-mailed statement. “We are asking people to display them outside their business or homes the week of April 20. In addition, we are hoping businesses will get a bow for each entrance of their business. I will have bows available for pick up at The Coastal Bank.”
For more information about Goodwin’s project, e-mail cgoodwin@thecoastalbank.com, call 369-4403 after 6 p.m. or 408-2171.
On May 9, the annual Kiss-A-Pig celebrity bartending night will be from 4-8 p.m. at the Sunbury Crab Company. Last year’s bartending event raised $16,000.
