Give thanks to those who gave all

It is Memorial Day weekend.
Our nation has set aside this upcoming Monday as a time to remember those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice so that we may live in freedom.
Living where we do, almost all of us know of someone who has paid this price. I am certain that just that sentence has the power to stir emotions for some.
I actually am writing this column just a few days after the death of Osama bin Laden. I am overwhelmed when I think of all that could have gone wrong on that mission and consider the bravery and heroics of those who carried out the mission.
I’ve never met any of them and likely never will. And yet they did what they did for me! Do you realize that? They did it for you, too.
And of course, as both a Christian and a pastor, those thoughts immediately cause me to think of the sacrifice made for you and me by the Lord, Jesus Christ.
The Bible tells us that because of his great love, he laid down his glory, took upon himself an earthly existence, and though perfect and sinless in every way, accepted the sin and evil of all time upon his own shoulders. He died in our place so that we might live forever.
I hope you will do more than merely have a cookout and enjoy the day away from work on this Memorial Day.
I hope you will take the time to give thanks for those who have died in our place on the battlefields of war.
I hope you truly will remember the ones who have made freedom our way of life. That’s the true meaning of Memorial Day.
And even more than that, I hope you will remember the one who died so that we might enjoy freedom, not just in this life, but for all eternity.
Jesus gave his life so that you and I might have life. Let us remember him and worship him for his goodness to us. He indeed is our Lord and Savior.
