The season of Lent

Lent is a 40-day period before Easter that begins on Ash Wednesday. Sundays are not counted during this period, because Sundays commemorate the Resurrection.
A season of soul-searching and repentance, Lent is typically a time for reflection. People take inventory of their lives and try to get closer to God. Lent originated in the early days of the church as a preparatory time for Easter.
During this season, the faithful rededicated themselves and converts were instructed in the faith and prepared for baptism. By observing the 40 days of Lent, the individual Christian imitates Jesus’ withdrawal into the wilderness for 40 days of praying and fasting.
Because Easter falls on different dates each year, the advent of the Lenten season varies from year to year. The 2009 Lenten season began Feb. 25, and ends April 11, which is the day before Easter.
In Liberty County, many churches participate in this time of fasting, prayer, repentance and self discipline. As you ride throughout the county, you will see churches that have erected a cross with purple cloth draped across it. On Good Friday, the purple cloth is replaced with a black cloth, and on Easter morning, the black cloth is replaced with a white cloth.
Members of St Philip’s Episcopal Church in Hinesville, under the leadership of Father Will Carter, are observing the Lenten season. In July 2004, Father Carter, a native of east Tennessee, came to Hinesville after spending time in Austin, Texas. He was ordained as priest of the church in August 2004. “People make you want to live here. The area is a good place to raise a family,” he said.
