Three months after its inaugural MERGE event, the Community of Inspired Women is expanding its outreach projects and monthly gatherings.
From 5:30-7 p.m. the first Tuesday of each month at the Liberty County Performing Arts Center, nearly 100 women of all backgrounds come together for networking, information and inspiration.
On Sept. 2, the group will host state Rep. Stacey Abrams, an award-winning author under the pen name Selena Montgomery, to discuss how she balances her careers as a novelist, lawyer and state representative for the 89th District.
Abrams is a graduate of Spelman College, the LBJ School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas at Austin, and Yale Law School. Using the pen name Selena Montgomery, she draws upon her interest in and experiences with social and economic policy, politics and creative writing to fuel her novels.
“We invited Rep. Abrams — or, should I say, Selena Montgomery — as a speaker not because of her titles but because of her story,” said Daisy Jones, co-founder of CIW. “No matter who you are, you have a story. Our goal is to share that story and inspire women to get from where they are to where they want to be.”
Community of Inspired Women is a grassroots, nonprofit organization founded in February 2013. The purpose of the organization is to mobilize inspired women throughout the community in a concerted effort to provide solutions to the vulnerabilities that plague the community. Programming includes self-esteem, image building, financial literacy, employability, educational attainment and monthly networking meetings called The MERGE.
The MERGE event is free and open to women ages 19 and older at the Performing Arts Center, 2140 E. Oglethorpe Highway in Hinesville. For more information on the Community of Inspired Women or to become a member, go to www.fb.com/communityofinspiredwomen or call 912-222-2211.
