It has been 65 years, and Willmon “Bill” Frasier and Hattie Hendry Frasier of Gumbranch are still enjoying each other.
The couple has been together longer than most people have been alive. They met when they were in school on Fort Stewart.
“We dated for about two years,” Hattie said. They were married Jan. 27, 1944, and recently celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary. While Bill, 81, and Hattie, 77, didn’t have a big celebration this time, there was no shortage of parties for their 50th and 60th wedding anniversaries.
When they were married in 1944, Hattie was 16 and Bill was 19.
Many years have passed, but their love remains strong. “I took on the responsibility, and the Lord has been good to us,” Bill said. “I have a great wife. It has been a long time, but I love her.”
Both were raised on Fort Stewart and moved to Liberty County after the government bought the land in the 1940s.
“A couple has to decide to stay together. They need to pray and put God first,” Hattie said.
Bill Frasier echoed his wife’s sentiment. “Put God first and everything else will work out. You have to keep the devil out and let God lead you,” he said. “Prayer has kept us together. We enjoy doing things together and we know how to settle our differences. A couple needs to communicate with one another.”
Hattie said her husband is a good man. “He is a very hard worker and a good provider. We enjoy going to church together, traveling and going out to eat, but he loves my cooking more. He loves sweets and chicken,” she said.
“I love her cooking. That is one of the reasons I love her. She makes the best stewed chicken and rice, peach cobbler and chocolate cake,” Bill said.
The Frasiers are long-time, members of Pleasant Grove African Methodist Church in Hinesville. Hattie sings in the choir and is a stewardess. Bill is a trustee.
Before retiring from the Liberty County Schools System, Bill was recognized as one of the longest-serving school bus drivers in the county. He also worked at Fort Stewart.
Hattie Frasier is retired from the Quartermaster Laundry on Fort Stewart.
Although he’s retired, Bill finds plenty to keep him busy. “I used to do a lot of farming, but I have gotten away from that. I still plant a garden,” he said. Frasier cultivates a variety of vegetables, such as peas, beans, corn, okra, greens and tomatoes.
“I don’t fish, but my son-in-law has a boat, and he loves to take me out,” he said.
Hattie said she loves to cook and enjoys gardening and tending to her flowers. She also enjoys watching television.
The Frasiers have three children, Evelyn Clark, Willmon Frasier Jr. and Dianna Taylor; five grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. Willmon lives in Augusta and is a retired sergeant major and Evelyn and Dianna live in Jacksonville. Evelyn is a teacher and Diana attends nursing school.
