Hunting Easter eggs has always been a part of the Easter celebration. Children look forward to it as much as getting their new Easter outfits.
Each year, the residents at Coastal Manor Nursing Home in Ludowici also anticipate their annual Easter egg hunt. The event is just one of many activities planned during the year for the residents. While the residents do not participate in hunting the eggs, local youngsters do.
“In addition to community children being a part of the Easter egg hunt, the residents’ families attend and their grandchildren participate in the Easter egg hunt. This is also an opportunity to involve and share with the community,” said Lucile Smiley, activity coordinator at Coastal Manor.
On March 31, the weather was ideal for an Easter egg hunt. More than 100 children gathered at the nursing home for the hunt. They were excited and ready to find eggs. Beautiful colored eggs were the order of the day.
“We boiled and colored 1,080 eggs. The residents and Coastal Manor employees prepared the eggs, and students from Bradwell Institute joined the staff in hiding the eggs around the nursing home,” Smiley said.
The children were separated into four age groups (0-3, 4-6, 7-10 and 11-13) to look for eggs. They wanted to find as many eggs as possible, but their main intent was to find the golden egg. Each age group had one golden egg. The children who found the golden eggs received a chocolate bunny.
While the children looked for eggs, the residents sat on the porch and enjoyed the fresh air and refreshments. Additionally, the residents, children, visitors and staff had the pleasure of enjoying Miss Bunny Rabbit, played by Tina Dominick.
The children also enjoyed SpongeBob. There were plenty snow cones available from the snow cone machine. Quentin Johnson of Midway donated these items.
“The residents, children, and staff were served snow cones,” Smiley said.
The Sunshine Generation Dance group from the Liberty County Recreation Department provided entertainment.
“Helen Jenkins (Coastal Manor activity aide) made an awesome bowl of angel-egg salad. The residents are still eating Easter eggs,” Smiley said.
