The weather held out as contestants made their way through the Dorchester Shooting Preserve Saturday for the fourth annual clay shoot to benefit the American Diabetes Association.
About 240 people participated in the event raising $72,000, making it one of the most successful clay shoots to date. It is the single largest fundraising event in Southeast Georgia that benefits The ADA.
“Liberty County is one of the backbones of the ADA in Southeast Georgia. The volunteers from the Hinesville area have led this region for the past 11 years and have had a huge impact on the work of the ADA,” Maria Center, regional director, said following the event.
Diabetes is the fifth deadliest disease, killing more than 220,000 Americans each year.
Known as the silent killer, because people may not experience any symptoms during the early stages, it is the leading cause of heart disease and stroke, adult blindness, kidney failure and lower limb amputation.
As with many of the volunteers and sponsors who become involved with ADA events, Claude Dryden of Dryden Enterprises supports the cause to find a cure for a disease that has affected many, including his children and others in his immediate family.
“I’m committed to the event in the hopes that we can find a cure one day. This disease does not get the fanfare that cancer or heart disease get but it is just as deadly and becoming more of an epidemic,” he said. “I’m sure if you asked around, everyone you know either has someone in their family or knows someone who is dealing with diabetes.”
The event exceeded last year’s fundraising total by $20,000, setting the bar high as preparations begin for next year’s campaign.
“The Dorchester event is a shining example of what great leadership and community support can do, the ADA is proud to be associated with this high quality event,” Center said.
The clay shoot was the second event in the Kiss-A-Pig campaign where Liberty County is competing against the Chatham County Board of Education to see who can raise the most money for the ADA.
The reason they use a pig in the campaign is to honor the pig for aiding in discovering the effectiveness of insulin for people with diabetes.
The next Kiss-A-Pig event is the eighth annual Kiss-A-Pig Poker Run on April 28. The event will start at the Harley Davidson store on Highway 204 in Savannah and make its way to the Wingmen Club House in Ludowici.

The Kiss-A-Pig Campaign culminates with the Gala and Silent Auction Buccaneer Costume Ball at 6 p.m. May 19 at the Tybee Lighthouse.
This year’s Liberty County candidate to kiss the pig is Angela Powell of Exit Team Realty. Powell is encouraged by the community support and votes she is receiving and is hoping for a chance to kiss the pig at the gala.
“It is an honor to be a part of this tournament and part of Kiss-A-Pig.
The community has been so supportive and this event was living proof of that,” she said.
