Blues and barbecue served up downtown
Blues and BBQ

On Saturday, the Hinesville Area Arts Council will host its annual Blues and BBQ festival from 6 p.m.-10 p.m. in Bradwell Park, but this year there are a few new deliciously tempting activities and twists.
The BBQ contest was added this year and features five local and regional chefs, all vying for top honors in the six categories: Best BBQ Chicken, BBQ Beef, BBQ Pork, Miscellaneous BBQ, Best Overall BBQ and the People’s Choice Award.
Festival-goers will decide the winner of the People’s Choice Award, and a panel of top-secret judges will decide the other category winners, which will be announced at 6:45 pm.
“The panel includes local celebrities and elected officials,” said Vicki Davis of the Downtown Development Authority.
A caricature artist will be present, incorporating the blues theme into drawings, and a performance artist will paint a seven-by-nine-foot mural as she is inspired by the music. The mural will be auctioned off and proceeds will go toward bringing future art and culture events to the city.
The blues portion of the festival includes a concert featuring The Eric Culberson Blues Band. Fatback and The Groove band will be opening the show, which starts at 7 p.m. after the BBQ contest.
“We really feel we have an event for all ages. Lots of people say that, but we really do have something for everyone,” Davis said. “We really want to get folks involved in the arts.”
The event is free. Food purchased from vendors
is extra. For more information, call Davis at 877-4332 or e-mail hdda@coastalnow.net.
