Dorchester Academy, one of the earliest schools for freed slaves, helped to shape the history of Liberty County. An exhibit highlighting the academy’s notable events and people is on display during March at the Old Liberty County Jail Museum. The museum is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m.-noon and from 1-4 p.m.  
For a more in-depth study of Dorchester Academy, visit the Dorchester Academy Museum of African-American History in Midway. The museum is open Tuesday through Friday from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 2-4 p.m.
