Evans shines in drama Puncture

Guess which film remains king of the box office, movie fans? That’s right — “The Avengers” still is No. 1. “Battleship” just couldn’t sink our heroes.

To celebrate, last week we looked at Scarlett “Black Widow” Johansson in her role as a zookeeper in “We Bought a Zoo.” Let’s keep this theme going by checking out Chris “Captain America” Evans as an attorney who takes on the health-care system in the independent film “Puncture.”

Evans plays real-life lawyer Michael Weiss. He and his partner decide to take the case of a young emergency-room nurse who is pricked by a contaminated needle. In this David-vs.-Goliath case, it becomes evident that even though an inventor has created a safety needle that retracts after use and can never be used again, hospitals are buried in a conspiracy to keep the safer needles out. While Weiss champions the case, he struggles with his drug addiction.

I can’t say that I was jumping up and down to see Captain America portray a drug addict, but what I can say is this: Evans plays the ugliness of Weiss’s life quite beautifully. And “Puncture” is a great “Erin Brockovich”-type film that depicts a tragic hero. You’ll be shocked to learn the statistics involving accidental needle-puncture deaths.

In fact, why not have yourself a little Evans marathon? After “Puncture”, you can grab “The Nanny Diaries” from 2007, which amazingly starred Johansson with Evans as her love interest.

Then you can pick up “Cellular,” my favorite Evans film of all time, and also watch him play superheroes in “The Fantastic Four,” “Push,” “The Losers” and “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.”

Why? Because I’m a fan!
