Hinesville announces schedule for Georgia Cities Week activities

Each year during the month of April, cities across the state schedule events in their communities to celebrate everything that makes their cities great during the Georgia Municipal Association’s Georgia Cities Week. With “City life” as its theme, the weeklong event will be April 17-23.
Hinesville officials recently announced their schedule of events for Georgia Cities Week.
“Our goal is to celebrate the city while educating our residents about the services and cultural enrichment our city provides,” Hinesville public relations manager Krystal Britton said.
“This year we placed special emphasis on school-aged students so that they may become more knowledgeable about the role of local government and become more involved in city activities and events.”
Events planned for the week:

Monday, April 18
• Job shadow day for 11th-grade students. Selected students will shadow employers all over the county for the day.
• The Hinesville Downtown Development Authority/Old Jail Museum will be open for tours to visitors.

Tuesday, April 19
• Job shadow day for 11th-grade students. Selected students will shadow employers all over the county for the day. 
• The Hinesville Downtown Development Authority/Old Jail Museum will be open for tours to visitors.
• Public art reception from 4:30–6:30 p.m. at the Old Jail Museum. Georgia Cities Week elementary art contest entries will be displayed and winners announced.

Thursday, April 21
• Hinesville Mayor Jim Thomas will give the state of Hinesville address at the Liberty County Chamber of Commerce Progress Through People luncheon. The event will take place at the National Guard Armory 11:30 a.m.–1 p.m.
• Hinesville mayor and council will host high school government students and answer questions from the students during the council meeting at 3 p.m. in the Hinesville Municipal Courtroom.

Friday, April 22
• City of Hinesville public service departments will station a traveling public display at participating schools in Hinesville. Students will learn about public-safety equipment and job responsibilities of the police, fire, public works and public utilities departments.
• A lunchtime concert in the park, sponsored by the Hinesville Area Arts Council, will feature a live musician, food vendors and information on arts and culture in the area. The concert is from 11:30 a.m.–1 p.m. in Bradwell Park.

Saturday, April 23

• Join city officials and employees for a citywide cleanup organized by Keep Liberty County Beautiful. Volunteers should arrive at 8 a.m. at Bradwell Park. Lunch will be served at noon.

A preview of Georgia Cities Week will be given April 7 at the Hinesville council meeting. The “If I were mayor for a day…” essay winners also will be recognized.
The meeting will be at 3 p.m. in the Hinesville Municipal Courtroom inside the Hinesville Police Department.
