New Savannah St. president to speak during area event

Dr. Cheryl Dozier, president of Savannah State University, will speak during the West Savannah District Sunday School Convention this week in Midway.

Dozier will deliver the noon message June 15 at Thebes AME Church, 132 Walthour Road, Midway. Dozier’s appearance is open to the public. The convention will run June 14-16.

Dozier was named president of SSU in May after serving as interim president since April 2011, according to the university’s website.

Prior to being named interim president at SSU, Dozier was at the University of Georgia as associate provost for institutional diversity from 2006-2011. Before that, she was the Gwinnett University Center’s assistant vice president of academic affairs from 2002-2006.

The website also said that Dozier received her master’s degree in social work from Atlanta University and her doctorate in social welfare from Hunter College.
