A 5-year-old child found unconscious in a retention pond Sunday has died, authorities said.
The child initially was reported missing from his home in Hinesville before searchers found him in a nearby retention pond.
According to Hinesville Police Department Sgt. Johnathan Greer, the youngster wandered from his home on Grandview Drive shortly before 4 p.m. Sunday. As officers from the Hinesville Police Department canvassed the Griffin Park subdivision within several minutes of the child’s disappearance, an officer checking backyards on the 600 block of Piedmont Avenue discovered the child submerged in a retention pond.
The child was unresponsive and the officer immediately began performing CPR as medical personnel were en route. The child was taken to Liberty Regional Medical Center before being transported to Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah.
