Atlantic Area CASA, Inc. is preparing to welcome a new group of volunteers through its upcoming Fall Flex Training, beginning Monday, October 26.
Flex Training is a five-week training program designed to prepare incoming Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) for their important role supporting children involved in the court system. Facilitated by Atlantic Area CASA’s Volunteer Coordinator, Lisa Choeun, the training provides prospective volunteers with the knowledge and practical tools they need to advocate effectively for the best interests of children.
Throughout the five-week program, participants will learn about the responsibilities of a CASA volunteer, including visitation, communicating with children and others involved in a case, gathering and documenting information, and writing reports for the court.
As part of the five-week training, participants will also take part in a Healthy Outcomes of Positive Experiences (H.O.P.E.) training session and Mandated Reporter Training, facilitated by Atlantic Area CASA, Inc. Executive Director, Petula Y. Gomillion.
“CASA training is about more than preparing volunteers to understand the child welfare system — it is about preparing them to be a consistent, informed, and compassionate presence in a child’s life,” said Petula Y. Gomillion, Atlantic Area CASA executive director. “Through H.O.P.E. and Mandated Reporter training, we help our volunteers recognize not only the signs of trauma and abuse, but also the power of positive experiences, safe relationships, and caring adults. Every tool we give a CASA volunteer strengthens their ability to advocate for a child’s safety, well-being, and future.”
Atlantic Area CASA serves children and families across Liberty, Long, Bryan, Evans, Tattnall, and McIntosh counties. Individuals in these communities who are interested in advocating for children and making a lasting impact are encouraged to consider becoming a CASA volunteer.
To become a CASA volunteer, individuals must be at least 21 years old and complete the required application, interview, and background check before beginning Flex Training.
