On a night when defensive stops were scarce, Bradwell Institute came up the most significant – and the last one.
The Tigers swarmed Brunswick Pirates quarterback Keygan Walker on his fourth-down scramble, and the Tigers held on for a wild 59-47 overtime win Friday night Olvey Field/Hokey Jackson Stadium.
It was the first overtime game in the long history of Olvey Field and with the win, Bradwell improved to 4-2 on the year and 2-1 in Region 1-6A.
The Tigers twice erased 14-point deficits and didn’t have a lead until midway of the fourth quarter. On the Tigers’ first play of overtime, Tyson Spears snared a tipped pass and bulled his way into the endzone to put the Tigers in front 55-49.
He topped that on the extra point. Spears, the backup holder, had to take over after regular holder Carlito Savea was hurt late in the fourth quarter. Spears took the bad snap, wheeled to his right and charged into the end zone for the two-point conversion and an eight-point lead.
“My kicker told me before the snap not to drop the ball,” Spears said. “Things happen, so I just had to make the best of it. In big moments, you have to step up.”
The Tigers are off until they host Greenbrier on October 16 for homecoming.
