It’s original cookies by the dozen and homemade cakes by the layer since Lynn Simmons rolled out Tu’s Sweets and Treats bakery shop on Frank Cochran Drive.
With original tried-and-true recipes, some handed down as far as three generations, and a free-standing, five-shelf oven, the bakery’s boast is “fresh and friendly.”
“I know there are other places where you can get sweets, but ours being fresh baked everyday …” Simmons said. “I think the ones that are stopping by have been real pleased.”
Rayshaune Brodie is among the satisfied.
Her husband banks with Navy Federal Credit Union, also in the Central Station plaza.
“I have a sweet tooth, so I just love sweets,” Brodie said. “I’m fan of cookies that have macadamia nuts and white chocolate.”
Brodie, who moved to town eight months ago, said she was drawn to the bakery’s cozy atmosphere.
“It’s just a good place to meet friends and sit down and socialize … or be alone and tap away on your computer,” Brodie said.
The bakery shop, which is complete with café tables for dining in, offers several color-speckled dessert bars, fruit cobblers and breakfast pastries, from Danishes to cinnamon rolls.
But made-to-order dessert trays have been Tu’s top sellers, according to Simmons.
“We’re doing a lot with cranberry and white chocolate for the holidays,” Simmons explained.
She hopes to offer a seasonal cookie and bar of the month.
Tu’s, Simmons’ nickname, opened early last month, at the urging of her mother and sister, both veterans of the local restaurant business.
Though it’s Simmons’ first solo operation, she’s no rookie in the kitchen.
“It’s just been a family thing for the past 10 years,” she said. “It’s something I can’t get out of me.”
The Liberty County native has seen the community change over the years, and was glad to locate on the Frank Cochran extension, “where all the activity is at.”
“I’m looking forward to growing and getting to meet a lot of new people,” Simmons said.
