Home builders give back to community

The Home Builders Association of Greater Savannah is sponsoring a Christmas luncheon for area residents in need on Dec. 23 at Johnson Square. The first annual Christmas In The Square will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and will feature a traditional Christmas holiday feast that includes turkey, sweet potatoes and all of the trimmings, said Patty Rietkovich, who is the HBAGS executive officer.
Rietkovich said the organization expects to feed about 1,000 people. “We’ll serve about a thousand plates to anyone who needs one,” Rietkovich said. “We have about 50 volunteers who are coming out to help”
Tents will be set up on the square, as will plenty of tables and chairs. Rietkovich and Read Brennan, of Synergy Designer Homes, Inc., who is event chairman for Christmas In The Square event, said the response by home-builder association members has been tremendous. More than 60 HBAGS members have stepped up to sponsor the dinner, providing funds and services at a variety of sponsorship levels.
“The most rewarding thing for me as director of the association is that it is no secret that the market isn’t as good as it has been in the past,” Rietkovich said. “As down as some of the builders are, and given the state of our industry right now, to see them turn around and do something like this for our community says a lot about our industry and our association.”
Brennan said that the builders have been very responsive to this community project. “For this cause, they have been more than willing,” he said.
In addition to providing a hot meal, the homebuilders’ association will give away 1,000 long sleeve T-shirts and cups to those who come out to eat. The T-shirts and cups will have the logos and names of the association members that have signed on as sponsors.
Both Rietkovich and Brennan said they expect Christmas In The Square to become an annual event.
