Hinesville Day Spa owner Sheela Eichhorn and managers Charla Baggs and Carol West are raising funds to fight domestic violence and increase awareness of it in a month-long campaign.

October is National Domestic Violence Awareness month.

"Everybody does know about Breast Cancer awareness," Baggs said. "But October is also Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Alzheimer’s Awareness Month, Pregnancy and Infancy Loss Month. This month wears a lot of hats. But this is something that is very prevalent."

Baggs said her sister was killed during a domestic dispute in 2015.

"As the statistics say, one in every four woman and one in every seven men have been victims of domestic violence," Baggs said. "And it is something that a lot of people don’t like to talk about… It is kind of hidden."

She said she is determined to bring the issue to the forefront. She said it’s important for people in small communities to know they have resources available to help victims.

"There is help out there. There are places they can go and get help and start to rebuild their lives," she said.

Eichhorn said representatives of Tri-County Protection Agency and Fair Haven of Jesup have been to the spa with information and talking to clients.

Eichhorn said she was surprised that Tri-County, in Liberty County, assists victims in five counties. She said she didn’t know Wayne County had a shelter until her company became involved in raising awareness.

"We want to do what we can to support those women and men," Eichhorn said.

During the event Eichhorn said a spa client, who had been assisted by the shelter, donated clothing to both shelters.

Baggs said the shelters need money, as well as clothing, toiletries and items for children and infants.

"When they leave and get out of these situations they often leave their entire lives behind," Baggs said.

Donations can be made at the spa, which is also making a donation. There is a flyer on its Facebook page.

"You can either print it out or when you come in you can show us on your smartphone or you can even pick up a flyer here at the spa," Baggs said. "And if you book a service throughout the month of October we will donate 15 percent of whatever your service cost is to Fair Haven and Tri-County."
