Three burns in training areas of Fort Stewart are set for today and could bring smoke into the Hinesville area.
The post’s Forestry Branch will be burning about 160 acres nine to 12 miles northwest of the containment area. Flames will be visible from Highway 144 in the area and smoke signs will be posted in the area.
With the wind forecast at 6-10 mph out of the northwest smoke could be blown back toward the city.
Branch officials say the controlled burns are set to clear underbrush from the post’s forests, making uncontrolled wildfires less likely.
