Voters in Liberty County’s 1st District may head back to the polls next for early voting in the Democrat primary.
Early voting for the primary runoff will be held June 8-12, from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. each day.
Challenger Larry Baker, the former mayor of Walthourville, got the most votes in the Democrat primary for the 1st District county commission seat. But he did not get a majority, leading to the runoff against the second-leading vote getter, incumbent Marion Stevens Sr.
Stanley Brown, a former Midway City Council member, was third in the three-way primary.
Voters in the Democrat primary runoff also will have choices for lieutenant governor, secretary of state, insurance commissioner and labor commissioner on the ballot. They also will choose who will oppose Jim Kingston in the fall for the U.S. House 1st District seat between Amanda Hollowell and Joyce Marie Griggs. Longtime U.S. Rep. Buddy Carter gave up running for another term to run for U.S. Senate.
Republicans voting in the runoff will have to choose a nominee for governor, along with a nominee for the U.S. Senate, lieutenant governor, secretary of state and state superintendent of schools. Republicans also will choose a nominee for the Public Service Commission-District 5.
No runoffs are needed in the non-partisan races.
Early voting is held at the elections main office in the Historic Liberty County Courthouse, 100 North Main Street in Hinesville, and at the Liberty County Community Complex in Midway. Polls at precincts will be open from 7 a.m.-7 p.m. on June 16, the primary election runoff day.
Absentee ballots are available through the Liberty County elections office through June 5.
Voters who requested a Republican ballot in the primary may receive a Republican ballot only for the runoff. Voters who request a Democrat ballot in the primary may receive a Democrat ballot only for the runoff. Voters who opted for a strictly non-partisan ballot in the primary may request either a Democrat or Republican ballot in the runoff.
Those voters who did not vote in the primary may take part in the runoff and can request either a Democrat or Republican ballot.
