Diamond Elementary staff chose a theme for their school’s reading day based on Dr. Seuss’ “Great Day for Up.” Students decorated the doors of their classrooms using kites and other things that go up into the sky, librarian Lisa Romans said.
“We’re doing this to encourage students to enjoy reading and make the books comes alive by doing what we’re doing,” Romans said. “Just to see the joy on their faces, it makes it all worth it.”
For lunch, students ate scrambled green eggs and ham as a nod to another famous Seuss’ book, “Green Eggs and Ham.” In keeping with the theme, several students and staffers also sported crazy, flyaway hairdos. Not many students seemed to complain as they gobbled down the very green eggs with pancakes and slices of ham.
“It’s tasty,” 6-year-old Maria Migliaccio said.
Military officials and other guest readers are expected to stop by later in the week. A student-character book parade, where students will dress like their favorite book characters, will wrap up the week-long reading-focused initiative.
