Volunteers descended upon Liberty County schools Thursday in celebration of Read Across Liberty Day, co-sponsored by Rotary Club of Hinesville, Kiwanis Club of Liberty County, Target, Keep Liberty Beautiful and Prevent Child Abuse Liberty.
Read Across Liberty began as Kiwanis Read-A-Book, Give-A-Book, and has grown in the past several years to reach as many students as possible. In addition to hearing special guests read some of their favorite stories, students also collectively received 5,000 books for free.
Jennifer Buehler of VIP Promotional Products is a longtime volunteer for the event. She read a story about cartoon hero Sponge-Bob Squarepants to students in Jennifer Creech’s first-grade class at Jordye Bacon Elementary.
“I’ve enjoyed doing this, and I think it’s wonderful that Kiwanis can partner (with other groups) to provide so many books,” Buehler said. “To have someone read to them is such a special treat.”
