Staff and students of Lyman Hall Elementary School recently rallied to help one of their own — and 23 others — afford a night’s stay at the Ronald McDonald House in Charleston.
The school had several fundraisers to help fourth-grade student Melvin West, who was diagnosed with a Wilms’ tumor.
Melvin underwent surgery to remove his diseased kidney, and he is now cancer-free.
While he was undergoing treatment, the West family stayed at the Ronald McDonald House in Charleston. School parent-outreach coordinator Lavonia LeCounte said the family appreciated the McDonald House staff so much that they requested all proceeds from the fundraisers be given to the Ronald McDonald House Charities.  
Students in Catrina Doomes’ fourth-grade class played a role in each of the fundraising events. The total donation made was $2,455. The donation will allow 24 families to spend one night at the house.
