LUDOWICI -- The Walker Middle School basketball C-team recently had two fundraisers to raise money to buy uniforms and equipment.
One was a yoyo sale, which raised $300, and the second was a cash drive, which had Assistant Principal Heath Crane, PE Coach Matt Futch and Long County Athletic Director Shawn Peek as competing team captains.
Each homeroom class brought in money to donate to one of the three teams. It was also decided that whichever team raised the most money, that team captain would then kiss a pig in front of the whole school.
The team that raised the most money consisted of Kristy Cornell's fourth grade and April Smith's seventh grade classes. The team captain was Crane. So this past Friday he had to pay the piper, or in this case, kiss the pig.
In front of the entire school, Crane kissed the critter as seventh-grader Levy Ray held the swine.
According to Wildcat head coach Faith Jefferson, the fundraiser brought in $325.
"I think it went exceptional, much better than I expected," the coach said.
The basketball team is comprised of sixth, seventh and eighth graders and currently has nine girls.
Jefferson said she plans to have another fundraiser, but hasn't yet determined when or what it will be.
"I want to thank the captains of each team, and all the students and faculty who helped make it a success," said Jefferson.
