In a “celebration of excellence” ceremony, Smiley Elementary was recognized as a Georgia Title I Distinguished School.
This honor was bestowed to all schools that have made AYP (Adequate Yearly Progress) four or more consecutive years.
Entertainment was provided by Rockdale County High School Show Chorus and African Chorus. State Superintendent Kathy Cox recognized each school for their achievements.
“The schools we honor tonight are our shining stars and serve as an example for the entire state. Your school is showing all of us that all students can learn, all students can succeed, and all students can excel no matter where they live in the state of Georgia,” Cox said.
Smiley Elementary had 10 representatives participate in the celebration.
“The celebration was amazing. Superintendent Cox understands the dynamics of our school, and is willing to share in our accomplishments. Our school staff enjoyed participating in this event. We look forward to attending in the future,” Sandy Jones, Smiley principal, said.
