2009 LCHS graduate Hillary Scales (music, contemporary vocal) and LCHS students Sideeq Heard (drama) and Jerrica Russaw (dance) participated in the NAACP’S national ACT-SO competition in New York City in July.
Each participated in four days of workshops, master classes and competitions. Each also attended question and answer sessions with actors Michael T. Jordan (“The Wire”) and Anika Noni Rose (“Dreamgirls” and “The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency”).
Participants competed against students from across the United States and received feedback from judges. The culminating activity was a parade of states from the New York Marriott to the Hilton Hotel for the national awards ceremony.
The local students, along with chaperone Nicole Carter, spent a day touring the sites of New York City including The Apollo Theater, China Town, Times Square, Central Park, Rockefeller Center and the play “Mamma Mia.”
