At a regular Hinesville City Council meeting Sept. 6, council voted to appoint George Smith as the Director of the Department of Inspections upon the recommendation of Hinesville City Manager Kenneth Howard. Smith is currently the chief building inspector and has been with the city for 24 years.

“The retirement of former Director of Inspections Steve Wellborn has left some large shoes to fill, but I have all the confidence that George will be able to be successful in this position,” said Howard. “He’s been a longstanding employee and I am confident we chose the most qualified candidate that will continue the department’s tradition of success and excellence.”

Smith came on board with the city in 1994 and has served as a plans examiner and chief building inspector, before rising to his current position. Prior, he worked as a home inspector for AmeriSpec and as a contractual construction inspector for the United States Air Force.

Smith holds numerous certifications from the International Code Council and Altamaha Technical Institute.
