City of Midway - Tree Lighting

The City of Midway will host its 10th Annual Christmas Tree Lighting on Dec. 3 at 6:30 p.m. The event began in 2009 while current Mayor Pro Tem Clemontine Washington was serving as a council member. She started the event to celebrate with residents and give back to the community. The 2019 event will be held at the new Midway City Hall located at 41 Charlie Butler Road. You can expect Christmas carols, refreshments, pictures with Santa, gifts from Santa and more. For more information, call (912) 884-3344.

Dec. 4

Georgia Municipal Association - Mayors’ Motorcade

The Georgia Municipal Association began the Mayors’ Christmas Motorcade in 1959 at the request of then-Governor Ernest Vandiver as a way of providing holiday gifts for the patients of Georgia’s mental health hospitals. The program aims at raising awareness of the needs of Georgia’s mental facilities.

This year’s motorcade will travel from Liberty County to Savannah on Dec. 4.

There are currently five regional mental health hospitals in the state, serving some 3,200 Georgians. Many of these clients have lived in a facility for much of their lives and receive little, if any, support from their families. Without the Mayors’ Christmas Motorcade, many of their clients would not receive a gift or visitors for the holidays.

The Christmas spirit is demonstrated by our local cities during the motorcade as officials and their staffs gather at the Georgia Regional Hospital in Savannah to share gifts. Any gifts not handed out during Christmas are used for client birthdays or given to newly arrived clients who may need many of the items. In this way, cities help the hospitals celebrate special occasions year-round and help the hospitals meet the needs of their clients that come from all over the state, including Liberty County.
