In the first of three public hearings the Liberty County Board of Commissioners discussed the potential to increase property taxes. The meeting was held Oct. 5 and livestreamed on the County’s Facebook Page.

County Chief Financial Officer Kim McGlothlin said the County has two millage rates; one for the residents of Hinesville and the other for the unincorporated areas of the County.

The County has tentatively adopted a millage rate which will require an increase in property taxes by the following amounts:

3.23 percent over the rollback rate in the unincorporated areas of the County.

2.81 percent over the rollback rate in the incorporated area of Hinesville.

4.99 percent over the rollback rate in the incorporated areas of Allenhurst, Flemington, Gumbranch, Midway, Riceboro, and Walthourville.

The board plans to hold another public hearing Tuesday Oct.5, at 6 p.m.at the Liberty County Board of Commissioners Annex Board Room located at 112 N Main Street, Hinesville. A final public hearing will be held at 5 p.m. Oct. 21.

This tentative increase above the rollback rate will result in a millage rate of:

16.60 mills in the unincorporated areas of the County, an increase of 0.52 mills.

14.80 mills in the pro-rated area of Hinesville, an increase of 0.405 mills.

16.60 mills in the incorporated areas of Allenhurst, Flemington, Gumbranch, Midway, Riceboro, and Walthourville, which is an increase of an increase of 0.789 mills.

According to a published public notice in the Sept. 22, Coastal Courier, the proposed tax increase for a home with a fair market value of $100,000 is approximately:

 $19.76 in the Unincorporated Area

$15.39 in the Incorporated Area – Hinesville

$29.98 in the Incorporated Areas – Allenhurst, Flemington, Gumbranch, Midway, Riceboro and Walthourville.

The proposed tax increase for non-homestead property with a fair market value of $100,000 is approximately:

$20.80 in the unincorporated areas of the County.

$16.20 in the incorporated area of Hinesville.

$31.56 in the incorporated areas of Allenhurst, Flemington, Gumbranch, Midway, Riceboro and Walthourville.
