The Hinesville Police Department is investigating the death of a 3-year-old Hinesville girl.

Hinesville Police Department Chief of Detectives Maj. Thomas Cribbs said Tuesday that police were called July 27 about an unresponsive child in a home on the 600 block of 1st Street. The call had been placed by the child’s male babysitter.

When Officer John F. Williams arrived  around 11:53 p.m., he found emergency medical personnel trying to revive the unconscious child. The girl was taken to Winn Army Community Hospital on Fort Stewart, where she later died. Cribbs said the girl’s body was taken to the GBI crime lab in Savannah, where an autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death.

It is standard procedure to investigate the death of any child younger than 18 as mandated by Georgia law, the chief of detectives said.
